E-scooter specs that matter

Weight, tire type, brakes and real range: the numbers worth comparing before you buy a scooter.

Scooter listings lead with top speed. For most riders the numbers that decide whether you'll still use it in a month are weight, battery size and how the frame holds up.

Weight decides where it goes

From our database, manufacturer figures:

Scooter Weight Top speed Battery Claimed range
Segway-Ninebot E2 Plus 33.7 lb 15.5 mph 220 Wh 15.5 mi
Segway-Ninebot F2 Pro 40.8 lb 20 mph 460 Wh 34 mi
Segway-Ninebot Max G2 53.5 lb 22 mph 551 Wh 43.5 mi
Apollo City 2.0 72 lb 32 mph 864 Wh 40 mi
Apollo Phantom 2.0 102 lb 44 mph 1,400 Wh 50 mi

A 34-pound scooter goes up a flight of stairs. A 100-pound one lives in the garage. Decide where it'll be stored and how you'll get it there before comparing anything else.

Battery, then claimed range

Claimed range comes from the maker's test, usually a light rider at moderate speed on flat ground. Battery watt-hours are harder to inflate. Divide one by the other and the Max G2 claims about 12.7 Wh per mile while the Phantom 2.0 claims 28, which tracks with its weight and speed. Put your own weight into the range calculator before trusting any range figure.

Speed and the law

Segway says the Max G2 and Max G3 ship at about 20 mph and reach 22 and 28 mph after you enable a higher speed in the app. That matters because some states cap e-scooter speed in statute. Check your state on our laws table before you unlock anything.

Frame and folding

Folding is convenient and it's also a known failure point. In March 2025, Segway recalled about 220,000 Max G30P and G30LP scooters because the folding mechanism could fail while riding; there were 20 injuries. See the safety page, and search the CPSC's recall list for any used scooter's exact model.

How we'd choose

Start from weight and storage. For a carried commute, stay under about 45 pounds (the E2 Plus and F2 Pro range in our data). For a longer commute without stairs, a 500+ Wh scooter like the Max G2. Only look at 70-pound-plus scooters if you have ground-level storage and roads where 30+ mph is legal and sensible.
